Sodium and chloride are important for the horse's salt balance and must be increased during work and sweating. Horses salt source is comes through the feed. Roughage generally contains low levels of sodium and therefore salt needs to be given as a supplement in the feed state, especially when a horse sweats or have a loose stomack. Lack of sodium can lead to a reduced water intake where it can give rise to a number of problems, including colic.
